Okay, sorry – more play-by-play pics of the renovation. I know you’re probably sick of them and don’t care much! – but this is sort of an online diary for me, so I’ll try to liven it up soon with more interesting non-torn-up-house-things, but for now this is all I’ve got!
These pics are all from last Tuesday, Day Seven of the renovation. They made even more headway on some pretty big things, including insulating the back wall, moving the doorway so it’s even with the future back door, framing out the second bedroom closet, and putting a floor in the master bathroom!
Here’s a pic of the doorway opened up and getting moved. This will be moving to the left about 9″, and will still be a transomed opening (no door though):
This doorway will lead to the back hallway where access to the second bedroom, second bathroom and back door will be.
I tried to depict in the picture below what this hallway will look like from the other direction, with the office on the left, and the laundry closet on the right. Where you see the door to the outside is the side porch, which will be enclosed, and that whole wall will be taken out:
Turning a little to the right, here’s the doorway, and then the second bedroom closet. There will be a wall running between these two doors, making the second bedroom:
And turning right a little more, the second bedroom closet and the back of the master bedroom closet:
Here’s the back of the house, with insulation under the tar paper, which I know will make a huge improvement in heat/cold efficiency!
I was really excited to see a floor put in the master bathroom! They put in new joists in a few places and ripped out the old plumbing tube that had been in the middle. I tried to show how the layout will look from this view, with the shower at the back and the toilet adjacent:
And looking from the other end, where the vanity will go:
And finally, we got our new columns installed on the front porch! We were planning on re-using the ones that we already had, but one of the three fell apart (rotted) once they took it down, and the other two were different heights and would have looked strange, so we opted for new wooden ones to be installed:
Tonight our proposal to enclose the side of the front porch goes before the Architectural Review Board, so fingers crossed our guys can get started on that in the morning!

Good luck at the review board tonight! You’re really making progress. How exciting!
Thanks!! I’m sure it will all go well but you never know!
First, this is not boring – it’s an interesting insight into what actually happens during a gut job renovation. Second, good luck!
