In this renovation, we’re trying to reuse anything and everything original from the house (siding, trim, doors, etc.) – (1) to save money, and (2) to keep the original charm of the house.
Since we’re only flip-flopping one window with a door, we didn’t have any leftover windows to use in the future second bathroom. If you remember, we took out the old back door, knocked down a wall between the existing powder room and random “to go outside room”, and fixed the rotted floors. Here’s a reminder of the plan:
You can see in the plan room for a small window…a window we didn’t have! We were assured that a window matching the existing windows would be exorbitantly expensive, and I couldn’t force myself to install a vinyl window from Home Depot. Though the least expensive route, it just wouldn’t have felt right.
One option we thought to do was put in a wooden octagon window, like the sister house next door to ours did:
This still just didn’t feel right for the house.
Then I had an A-HA!!! moment when driving around downtown and past an antique shop with a bunch of these in the window…antique stained glass windows!!!
I thought it would look so neat to have a stained glass window set into the back wall – it fits the neighborhood, it’s not trying to match the existing windows, and it really adds some interest to the space. Good idea?
Here are some of my favorites:
Wouldn’t one of those look so rad in the tub/shower wall?! So Husband and I talked it through, and we decided, yes let’s do it!
So I went back to the antique shop, did some measuring, and finally picked one. The prices ranged between $95- 250, so obviously I was shopping at the lowest price point. I still wanted something bigger so that it would let the most possible light into the bathroom, as well as “go” with the exterior (keeping the same shade of yellow paint).
Here’s what I picked!
There were other patterns I think I liked better, but this was by far the largest one at the $95 price point, plus it’s yellow! I can’t wait to see it installed!

what a great idea! can’t wait to see what it looks like.
My mom made stained glass pieces all throughout my childhood! She included bunches of stained glass windows and kitchen cabinet inserts into almost every home that we lived in, rented out, or flipped. This post brought back such memories!
Love the window. My Mom did some stained glass too and I have some in the kitchen. You are pretty brave undertaking that house with all the rot/foundation issues.
