Sister is an amazingly talented actress, up in the Big Apple trying to make it big! She will, I just know it, but that doesn’t make the pre-making it life on a major budget in NYC very fun. She has moved several times already and, as a result, hasn’t bought much in the way of furniture to feel more at home in her different apartments. One major need is a DESK! And she needs it CHEAP!
So I scoured Craigslist and found a desk being sold for $15. $15! Is that a deal or what?! I strapped that bad boy to the roof rack on my car (just like with my fireplace mantle) and now I need to get to work.
not much to write home about, huh?
(Sorry for the terrible “before” pic – I took it on my iPhone in the basement before I started sanding it.)
It’s pretty ugly, huh? The finish on the desktop was chipping like crazy, and the previous owner had taken to writing in sharpie all over the top and carving skulls and crossbones into the wood. Awesome. And that hardware is just horrible. But I think the piece has good lines, and it’s in decent shape; it will be a beaut once it’s primed, painted, and adorned with new hardware! There is such potential!
So what’s the vision with this piece? She wants something “chic” but not “shabby chic”, neutral but with personality a la Anthropologie, and very “city hip”. We’re going gray! Here are a few inspiration pics she pulled from the fabulous knack studios:
We’re thinking of doing either lucite pulls or knobs (very Anthro), but we’ll get them from Home Depot for much cheaper:
And then we want to paint the insides a fun color, perhaps a green or turquoise.
I’ve already sanded the top so it’s now silky smooth. Hopefully I can wrap up the sanding Friday after work, slap on some primer, and perhaps even get it painted gray this weekend!
Do you have any weekend projects in the hopper???

I had plans to do something like this, and never got to it. Good luck, I can’t wait for the results!
You are such a great sister- its a great desk thats going to look even better once you get your hands on it. I cant wait to see the after photos
I can’t wait to see the after pictures. Love the color gray. My weekend project is 30 custom tissue boxes for a customer.
Great pick up! I can’t wait to see what it looks like in the end. I’m loving the inspiration behind this project…
I wish I had a sister that was so generous with her time and talent! I can’t wait to see the results.
By the way, I’m leaning towards knobs, but I’m sure it will be cute either way.
I LOVE this project! I can’t wait to see what the finished result it. LOVE the grey color- its going to look perfect in your sisters NYC digs. Girl- you are SO talented- I love your eye for awesome projects like this.
Pulls! I haven’t seen as many lucite pulls vs. knobs, and I love them! This is a fun project!
Leila, you are one great sister! I love the dark gray desk you show that is your fave too. I think it is very classic. I don’t work much with gray as I find it looks horrible and flat in our house (in our light, for some reason). The lighter shades are nice also – and the lucite/crystal looking knobs will be lovely! I think doing the inside in a lighter colour will be fab (and easier to find stuff in the depths if it’s not dark!). Can’t wait to see the final results. Does she like pink or mint green? Think those would both be pretty with a suitable gray.

The gray is a great choice, and I love those clear pulls. Those original pulls look just like the ones on my grandmother’s dresser that I recently updated: http://journeychic.com/2009/09/15/grandmas-bureau-gets-a-makeover/
Thanks for the sweet comments everyone! I’m excited to see it all done…and I’m totally doing the lucite pulls – thanks for your input!!!
JourneyChic – You’re right, the desk looks like a little sister of your grandma’s dresser! I love how you updated the pulls!
You’re such a great sister! I can’t wait to see the after photos.
Jenn – Thanks for the link!
Everyone else – Check out this post! Jenn’s been doing an awesome series on desks…and this post knocked it out of the park!
